Developed by the Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station
Developed from Taichung No. 3 and Japan Ouu No. 3, this variety was released in 2017 to improve the mechanical harvesting of adlay.
Shorter plants
About 10% shorter than Taichung No. 3, reducing lodging risk and improving compatibility with grain combine harvesters.
Large, rounded grains
Grain weight is about 12% higher than Taichung No. 3, supporting dehulling and a higher proportion of intact kernels.
Stable yield
Demonstration fields averaged 4,000 kg per hectare, about 40% above previous local records.
Processing value
Red adlay contains approximately 12–15% protein and is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and phytochemicals.
Demand for edible adlay continues to grow in Taiwan, while domestic production remains below one tenth of imports, leaving room for expanded cultivation.
