Lychee Fruit Cracking: Water, Calcium and Potassium

Reduce cracking risk by stabilizing root-zone moisture and aligning peel development, mineral balance, canopy and crop load.

Cracking reflects uneven fruit growth

When flesh expands rapidly but the peel cannot stretch enough, fruit may split along weak areas. Cultivar, size, maturity and peel health all influence risk.

Rain after drought is a common trigger

Growth slows under drought, then internal pressure can rise rapidly after heavy water input. Drip irrigation, mulch and drainage help maintain a steadier root-zone moisture level.

Balance calcium and potassium

Calcium supports cell walls and potassium supports water regulation, but neither is a stand-alone cure. Use soil and leaf information, and avoid salinity or ion imbalance that restricts uptake.

Manage canopy and crop load

Dense shade can affect peel development and disease conditions, while excessive crop load strains the tree. Pruning, fruit load and leaf-to-fruit balance belong in the same program as irrigation and nutrition.

Act before cracks appear

Post-cracking rescue is usually too late. Track rain, irrigation, fruit diameter and inputs from flowering through expansion to identify the orchard’s highest-risk window.
