Why Lychee Drops Fruit: Calcium, Water and Tree Vigor
Distinguish normal physiological fruit drop from pollination, water, root and nutrition problems before choosing an intervention.
Separate normal and abnormal drop
Lychee naturally sheds part of its initial fruit set. Investigate further when drop follows a specific weather event, fruit stalks look abnormal, leaves lose color or tree vigor varies strongly across the orchard.
Pollination and flowering weather come first
Cold, prolonged rain, dry heat or weak pollinator activity can reduce initial set. Fertilizer cannot replace pollination conditions, and sudden concentrated inputs during bloom can add stress.
Avoid sharp moisture swings
Heavy irrigation or rain after drought changes root-zone and fruit water status rapidly. Stable moisture, drainage and mulch are more useful than emergency feeding after fruit has already dropped.
Calcium depends on roots and water movement
Calcium transport depends on root activity, moisture and transpiration. Foliar inputs may supplement but cannot replace root health and balanced nutrition; excessive potassium, ammonium or salinity may also interfere.
Match management to crop load and vigor
Heavy-bearing trees, vigorous shoots and weak trees need different decisions. Record flowering, drop waves, flush growth, irrigation and fertilizer to refine next season’s program.
